There are lots of common website mistakes we spot again and again.
As website designers, we spend a lot of time looking at business websites, both those we’ve built and those we’re asked to improve. Over time, some common mistakes crop up again and again. The good news? They’re all fixable, and getting them right can make a big difference to how your business is seen online!
1. Slow Loading Times.
If your website takes more than a few seconds to load, visitors will often click away. Large image files are one of the main culprits.
Fix: Optimise your images before uploading (aim for around 200kb each or less), and use an image caching plugin like LiteSpeed Cache.
2. Missing Mobile Responsiveness.
It’s common to see more than half of website traffic coming from mobile devices, yet some sites still don’t work properly on smaller screens.
Fix: Test your website on different devices. A responsive design ensures your site adapts to mobiles, tablets, and desktops seamlessly. We can help make your site look good on any screen size!
3. Confusing Navigation.
If people can’t find what they need quickly, they’ll leave. Overly complicated menus or hidden pages are common problems.
Fix: Keep your navigation simple. Stick to clear labels like Home, About, Services, Contact, and make sure key information is never more than a few clicks away. Intuitive navigational aids like breadcrumb trails and secondary navigation menus can make large sites a lot more user-friendly.
4. No Clear Call-to-Action.
You’d be surprised how many websites don’t tell visitors what to do next, whether that’s booking, buying, or contacting.
Fix: Add clear call-to-action buttons like Get in Touch or Buy Now so users know exactly how to take the next step.
5. Outdated Content.
An old blog post from 2017 or broken links can make your site feel neglected.
ix: Keep your content up to date, check for broken links regularly, and review your website every few months.
Fixing these common website mistakes doesn’t just improve the look of your site; it can boost trust, SEO, and conversions. If you’re not sure where to start, that’s exactly where we can help. We can review your site, identify issues, and make sure your website works as hard as you do.
