A Logo Design Process: What to Expect from Start to Finish

Benjamin Henry Website design flatlay

Designing a logo isn’t just about creating something professional; it’s about creating an identity that represents your business. As website and graphic designers, we take pride in making sure that every logo we design is thoroughly researched, brainstormed and tailored to your company brand.

Here’s what the logo design process looks like when you work with us, and what you can expect to receive at the end of the project.

Step 1: An Initial Briefing

We always start with a conversation. Whether it’s over email or a phone call, we will go through an initial brief to learn about your business and discover your history, market, consumers and goals.

We’ll ask about:

  • Colours that you love (or dislike)
  • Any specific imagery, symbols, or ideas you have in mind
  • Logos or branding styles you like, and any you are not fond of
  • Your customers and target markets
  • The overall feeling or message you want your brand to convey

This discovery stage helps us get a clear understanding of your brand’s personality before we start designing any initial concepts.

Step 2: Research & Concept Development

Next, we dig into research and sketching. We explore your industry and competitors to ensure your logo stands out. The next stage is brainstorming and creating initial concepts, starting with sketches, shapes and a range of ideas.

We then transition into Adobe Illustrator to build these ideas digitally, refining layout, choosing typefaces, and exploring colour palettes that align with your brand vision.

Step 3: Design Presentation & Feedback

Once we’ve refined the strongest concepts, we’ll present you with a variety of logo designs to review. These will include different styles, layouts, and directions.

We’ll then invite you to:

  • Choose the version that feels right
  • Suggest any tweaks or adjustments you’d like (this could be colour changes, layout refinements, or different fonts)

Designing a new logo is a collaborative process, and your feedback helps us shape the final result.

Step 4: Final Files & Brand Guidelines

After the final logo has been approved, we’ll put together your brand package, which includes everything you need to use your logo consistently across print, digital, and social platforms.

Here’s what you’ll receive:

  • A Brand guidelines document covering:
    • Your logo usage
    • A colour palette (with hex, RGB and CMYK codes)
    • Typography & fonts
    • Logo variations and idents

  • And of course your final logo files, typically including:
    • Large JPG (great for print previews)
    • A4 PDF (ideal for professional printing)
    • PNG with transparent background (for web use)
    • SVG (scalable vector for any size or format)

If you need any other formats, we’ll be happy to help.
